When You Don't Know What to Say

For many people, the hardest thing about prayer is simply not knowing how. Is there a correct format? Special vocabulary? A right posture? In a culture where the proper form of things matters — where even a business email has rules — talking to God can feel like an exam you haven't studied for.
Here is the surprising news: the Bible says even the apostle Paul didn't know how to pray. 'We don't know how to pray as we ought,' he admits. And instead of a technique, he offers a promise: the Spirit of God himself prays within us, 'with groanings which can't be uttered.' When your words run out, God's Spirit keeps going.
This means prayer was never a performance to get right. It's closer to how a small child talks to a parent — unpolished, direct, sometimes just a cry. No parent grades their child's grammar. They hear the need underneath it.
So start wherever you are. Tired? Say 'I'm tired.' Confused? Say 'I don't understand.' Angry? God has heard angry prayers for thousands of years — the book of Psalms is full of them. Honesty is not disrespect. In prayer, honesty is the whole point.
You don't need religious language — there is no keigo requirement in heaven. You need only to turn toward God and begin. The Spirit will carry it from there.

God, I don't always know what to say to you. Thank you that I don't have to get the words right — that your Spirit prays even in my silence. Teach me to come to you honestly. Amen.
