Why did Jesus die on the cross?
That's one of the most important questions anyone can ask. Because of sin, death was the penalty we owed. Jesus lived the only truly sinless life, so he had no debt of his own to pay; that's what made him able to take ours instead. On the cross, he carried the death that was ours to carry. It wasn't God punishing someone else to satisfy his anger: God himself, in Jesus, paid that price for us, because he loves us.
